What is Candida?
Candida Albicans is a yeast/fungus that is responsible for the condition known as Thrush or Candidiasis. Everyone has candida albicans present in their body, but in a healthy system, this fungus is harmless, causing no issues or compromising daily bodily functions.
Even though, some people don’t suffer from any symptoms, common ones are itching in the vagina, anus or penis areas. Medical Doctors estimate that at least 75% of women experience Candidiasis in their lives, with functional medicine experts estimating even higher numbers.
Women are generally more susceptible to Candida due to hormones as well as the accommodating environment present in the vaginal cavity mostly.
But candida does not only live in the genital cavities mentioned above and can be found in the oral cavity as well as internally in our digestive tract. Because of new research showing its presence in the digestive tract, a lot of digestive, mental and immune disorders can be linked to the unbalanced growth of this fungus.
Unfortunately, standard allopathic medicine is not taking candida overgrowth into consideration when dealing with different diseases as it should, at most times, this goes undetected.
Symptoms linkes to Candida overgrowth
When the yeast starts to overgrow into the body, it triggers a variety of symptoms such as:
– Constipation and /or Diarrhoea (which can mask as IBS)
– Food Cravings (mostly sugar and wheat)
– Mental confusion
– Memory problems
– Inability to concentrate
– Spots in front of eyes
– Mood swings
– Skin rashes
– Persistent coughing
– Regular bouts of thrush
– Arthritis-like joint pain
– Chronic Fatigue
From the list one can see that a lot of the issues linked to Candidiasis can easily be mistaken and therefore treated as others health issues would, at times making things worse. Candida is particularly tricky and important to be taken care of because of its affect on the gut lining. the overgrowth can cause issues to the villi (the small tentacles on our colon that are responsible for nutrients absorption) and increase the risk of food sensitivities and leaky gut syndrome.
What can cause Candida overgrowth?
Many factors can unbalance candida in our bodies, from sudden hormones fluctuations (especially oestrogen, which is why women are more prone to infections) to the use of antibiotics. Diet is also a major factor in candida overgrowth, with processed, sugar leaden and antibiotic and hormones packed food being pushed on the public all the time.
